Coach’s Report

Firstly welcome to the new swimmers that have joined so far this year and I hope everyone had a good Christmas break. Again we have a packed line up of swimming events and club events this year so make sure you keep an eye on the notice board for details of these.
With this year’s galas still yet to kick in I thought best to run over training expectations in this report. We ask all swimmers to be poolside ready to start 5 minutes before the start time, anyone who arrives after a session’s start time my be asked to warm up in the learner pool or may not be able to take part in the session. If you know that you are not going to be able to make it to the pool in time then please text me so I can let the teacher/coach know and we can prepare for this.

Swimmers may I remind you that being ready poolside is not you standing there but that you are ready to dive in and start and you have all your equipment with you too. The key to progression this year is going to be down to how you train in the pool and with this we expect everyone to carry out their training sessions to their full potential and complete drills set to the best of their ability, this includes correct starts and turns. As a club we are in a fortunate position where we have a large number of junior swimmers and a large number of swimmers wanting to join the club and this does mean we also have swimmers eager to take places in the next squad or lane up. Finally thank you to everyone who attended the junior presentation party and senior presentation ball. Well done to everyone who picked up trophies and medals.

If you wish to talk further to me please feel free to come see me at the end of a Thursday or Friday session or contact me on 07727125427 or tim.kingfishers@hotmail.com Good luck to all for the year ahead. Tim

The first order for the new club tee shirts has been sent off and the shirts are to be worn poolside at all swimming events with black shorts. Other pieces are available to make up a full kit such as tracksuit bottoms, shorts and tracksuit tops and details of these will be available at a later date.

Annual Membership Fees Now Due
The Annual Membership Fee of £32 for all swimmers is now due and we would request payment by 31st January 2012. Please pay by cheque made payable to BTSC. The annual fee of £32 includes the Category 1 membership payment we have to make to the ASA for each individual swimmer who is registered with our club. It also covers other annual overheads which the club incur. Monthly fees cover the ongoing fees of pool hire, coaches fees etc. For those swimmers who are taking part in the County Championships or other open meets, the swimmer also needs to be additionally registered as a ‘Category 2’ ASA member. This incurs a further charge of £16.80 which we have to pay to the ASA. For any swimmer that this affects, please make a separate cheque payable to BTSC for £16.80, or multiples of this if you have more than one swimmer requiring this registration in your family. Category 2 registration usually only affects the competitive swimmers in the club, however should you be unsure about whether this affects your swimmer, please do not hesitate to speak to Julie Yallop, Membership Secretary. If at this stage you are unsure whether your swimmer will need to be Category 2 registered this year, this can be deferred until such time as they may decide to enter an open meet. If they do, it is your responsibility to make Julie aware of this so that the relevant registration and payment can be made before they enter the competition. Finally, all committee members, teachers, coaches, poolside helpers and officials need to be registered with the ASA as Category 3 Members and this is charged to the club at £5.20 per person. If you fall into this category, please also pay the Club £5.20 so that we can pay for these registrations.
Please hand any cheques to one of the following:- Julie Yallop – Membership Secretary Mobile No 07894091397 OR if Julie is not around to Christine Howe Should you have any query please see Julie at the pool. With many thanks From the Beccles Kingfishers Committee

Logbooks
New log books are to be given out soon and both parents and swimmers are encouraged to read them. Could parents please ensure that swimmers complete the logbooks on a regular basis and hand them to the coaches on a Thursday evenings. This applies to Performance squad at this stage.

Diary dates
The Summer BBQ this year will be held on 15 July at Ringsfield Village Hall. This has been a very popular event in previous years. A fun day for all the family – get those water pistols at the ready! A full list of galas and open meets are displayed on the Club notice board and website.

Social Events
Feedback from parents and swimmers suggests that both the Junior Christmas party and the Senior Presentation evening held at Ringsfield Village Hall were successful. The committee would like to hear feedback on these two events to help us plan and build on the success.

A.S.A. HELPERS CERTIFICATE
Are you interested in helping the teachers and coaches on poolside? What does it involve? You will be required to attend the ASA Helpers course which provides an introduction to teaching and coaching. The course is made up of six hours, three hours theory (classroom environment) and three hours practical work; the helpers will be given the opportunity to practice what they have learnt during the course schedule. Winter League Round 2
Bungay Pool, 28th Jan 2012 ‘The view from the pool side’ With the Kingfishers enjoying a rare home draw, the team looked focused before the event. With many young swimmers swimming above their age groups, the team knew that place results would be tough but after a hugely successful club championships and county qualifications, the team needed to keep on PB pace. The Kingfishers welcomed Lawrence Lowman for the first time in the open category. The atmosphere was rather subdued at the start, with Saxons not turning up for the event. The four teams, Lowestoft & Oulton Broad, Stowmarket, Leiston and Beccles, eventually lifted themselves to expected levels (with some help from John Doran on commentary). From the start, the team started working well and though Beccles were finishing in the lower placings, the swimmers were gaining good times and many PBs. This followed great efforts from the whole team. Tim confirmed this – “Everyone worked really hard, were on a good pace and we performed as I hoped. This was an excellent start to the season and I am very pleased”. Noted races were superb wins for Eleanor Chick and Hannah Barnes respectively but there were also some great other times from all the swimmers.

Special cheers were heard in the last relay race as Jacob Barber swam for the last time. We hope to see him soon but well done Jacob – we will miss you. Faster starts and turns have been worked on in the last few weeks and this showed with good improvement but with still more work to do to improve even further. This second round was eventually won By Lowestoft, 2nd Stowmarket, and 3rd Leiston with Beccles finishing in a not too distant 4th. Thanks go to all the swimmers, officials, cheer leaders and for a very efficient and well run gala. The club can now look forward to the third round (venue TBC) in Feb and also the county championships in March for the swimmers who have qualified.
Jamie Fenn – 30/1

3 May 2010 Early boost for Kingfishers

The Beccles Kingfishers Swimming Club began another season in the top flight of the County Summer League in encouraging fashion.
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Beccles once more were fighting it out with the county's top teams in this year Summer League.
Seen as one of the smaller clubs in the league, Beccles got off to a great start and sent a shock through the other teams taking part showing that they weren't looking to just make up the numbers in their third year of being in the top flight.
The night got off to a great start as Jenny Beevor and Robert Thurtell kicked things off.
The two more experienced swimmers put the pressure on from the off with strong swims in the boys and girls 100m individual medley.
Jenny picked up a good second place which she later matched in her 100m freestyle and breaststroke events, as did Robert in his 100m breaststroke event. Jenny's team-mate Nina Bircham, another experienced swimmer, took maximum points with two first places in her 100m backstroke and butterfly races.
To round off the 13 and under age group Dalton Yallop put in his best performance so far in his races getting two personal bests for 100m freestyle and backstroke.
In the 12/u age group Rhianna James set the pace in the 50m butterfly event with another first place for the team and a great pb. Hannah Barnes secured two solid third places and a pb in her 50m backstroke race while for the boys Elliot Fenn, who was swimming up an age group, secured a third place in his 50m breaststroke race, with a further pb for Matthew Seaman in his 50m freestyle event.
Elliot also took second and a great pb swimming breaststroke in his own 11/u age group. Melissa Bygrave joined the list of first places in the 50m breaststroke for the 11/u girls as did her team-mate Tamara Spooner in her 50m freestyle event followed by a strong second in her 50m butterfly race. Nina Howell and Josh Birch rounded off the great 11/u performances with a second (Nina) and third (Josh) place in their 50m backstroke events.
Not to be outdone by the older swimmers the 10/u age group made sure they more than matched their team-mates' efforts. Katie Howell and Matthew Doran kicked things off with two great pbs each in 50m backstroke and freestyle. It was left to Sophie Thurtell and Henry Barnes to battle it out in their 50m butterfly and breaststroke races. Henry secured two second places and a pb in his breaststroke race and Sophie a third in her breaststroke event.
Those great individual races along with some brilliant relay events really put the Beccles squad in the mix and at the end of the night's first round saw the club reach its highest position in the Summer League.
The club will now go into round two sitting in an impressive second place in the league, showing how far they have come over the past few years following their promotion in 2008.
It sets up an exciting round two gala, which Beccles will be hosting on May 22, at Bungay pool.

16 April Relay marathon by Beccles swimmers
FIFTY swimmers from Beccles Town Swimming Club completed a gruelling 24-hour relay at Bungay pool in aid of Sports Relief and also to help raise money towards a new club electronic timing system and scoreboard. The endurance relay was kicked off by Richard Clarke and Louise Shepherdson at 8pm last Tuesday with the 50 swimmers split into two teams and each swimmer completing an hour or half stint in the pool. Swimmers of all ages took part in the event from the under nine-year-olds of Max Beevor, Adam Seaman, Phoebe Chick and Alice Collyer to the more senior swimmers of Steven Kirby, Ellen Nelson, Zanna Yallop and Amber Bircham. The event also brought out the uni swimmers Rachel Doran, Ellie Clarke, Jonny Harrison, Douglas Olley and also Masters Jon Doran and Tim Millett. It was in fact the experienced heads of Jon and Tim, along with Amber, who managed to stay up and awake for the full 24 hours. It was the first time the club has put on this kind of event and proved to be a huge success with massive support from the swimmers and parents. It was the more youthful swimmers Nina Bircham, Jenny Beevor and also seniors Alex Eames-Bayton and Jenny Seaman who clocked up the most meters and broke the 4,000m barrier in their hour swims. In total the swimmers clocked up a massive 155,150 metres or 96 miles which is the same as crossing the channel over four times. The club would like to thank all the swimmers who took part and made the event possible, along with Waveney District Council for their support in putting on the event and the members of the public who supported the event.
